Built by students and staff at King's
qVault is led jointly by a medical student and an academic at King's College London, and built with students, engineers and researchers. It began in 2023 with one question: could AI give every student good practice questions from their own course, for free? Three years later it is a complete platform for revision, and a research platform that other teams can run studies on, with more than 1.6 million interactions from students who chose to use it.

Free for every student
qVault is free for UK students, with no advertising or sale of student data. Our first King's Academy award funded work on AI written exam questions and flashcards, so medical students could practise with material from their own course.
- College Teaching Fund: AI. King's Academy, 2023–24
- AI powered personalised SBA questions for progress tracking. IFAA 2024
- Enhancing AI generated single best answer questions in medical education. ICERI 2024
Built with students, as partners
A medical student and an academic lead qVault together and share principal investigator status. Students help decide what we build. A 2024 focus group asked for questions, notes and flashcards from their own slides. Those requests became Create, qNotes and qCards.
- Student Partnership Impact Award. SEDA and Jisc, 2024
- qVault.ai: Student Staff Co Design and Personalised Learning. 12th Change Agents' Network Conference, University of Plymouth, 2025
- Synergistic feedback: personalisation with community quality assurance. EDULEARN24, 2024
Inclusive by design
qVault is led in part by a Faculty Inclusive Education Lead and designed to meet WCAG 2.2 AA. Our second King's Academy funding drew on what students and NHS staff told us to bring diverse cultural contexts into AI written clinical cases.
- College Teaching Fund: Race Equity and Inclusive Education. King's Academy, 2024–25
- Inclusive OSCE Reform: AI Case Generation and Real Time Communication Simulation. King's Academy Education Conference, 2025
Tested and published
We study how people learn with qVault and publish the findings. Lenny has been through a randomised crossover trial, with further work on the gap between perceived ease and performance. Our third King's Academy award supports research into how students learn from explanations.
- Evaluating a custom chatbot with first year medical students. Behavioral Sciences, 2025
- When easy feels effective: perception and performance in AI assisted anatomy. Journal of Anatomy, 2026
- College Teaching Fund: TASK. King's Academy, 2025–26

Governed from the start
qVault is registered with the ICO and studied under King's ethics approval. Results are reported in aggregate, with small groups combined to protect individuals. Student content is never used to train AI.
